What to expect from therapy

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. If you are reading this, you have already done something important: you are considering giving yourself the space to pause, reflect and get support. Many people feel uncertain about what to expect from therapy or whether it will “work.” That is completely normal.

Is therapy confidential?

One of the most important things to know is that therapy is confidential. This is my garden office. It is a safe place to bring the parts of life that feel messy, overwhelming or confusing. Together, we can look at those experiences and make sense of them.

Therapy is not about being judged or told what to do. It is about being understood, supported and given room to think in a different way.

It is also completely normal to get emotional in therapy. You may feel sad, angry, or quiet at times. All of these responses are welcome in the room, and can become part of what we explore together.

What happens in the first therapy session?

Starting therapy can feel daunting, especially the first session. At the beginning, I will ask a lot of questions. This helps me get to know you and begin to understand how best to support you. Over time, you may find yourself doing more of the talking.

The early stages can sometimes feel messy or confusing, but that is okay. I am used to unpicking tricky knots and helping make sense of complexity.

As part of my professional training, I also experienced therapy myself. I know what it feels like to sit in the client’s chair for the first time, and the courage it takes to begin trusting a therapist. This helps me meet new clients with empathy and an awareness of how vulnerable those first sessions can feel.

What therapy feels like over time

Some sessions may feel illuminating, like pieces of the puzzle are finally coming together. Other sessions might feel harder, or even frustrating. There may be times when you do not feel like coming at all. This is a normal part of the process.

Therapy is a little like going to the gym. At first, it can feel awkward and even tiring. But if you keep showing up, gradually you start to notice the difference. There is more awareness. You feel stronger, more resilient, and better able to manage life’s challenges.

Working with a therapist: the pace is yours

In our work together, you are in charge. We take things at your pace. Therapy is not about me acting as a judge, jury, teacher or parent. It works best when we think together about what matters to you, explore the patterns that shape your relationships and feelings, and create new ways forward.

Clinical supervision and high standards of care

In between sessions, I do not forget my clients. Like all accredited therapists, I have regular clinical supervision with an experienced colleague. Supervision is a confidential process that ensures I am reflecting carefully on the work and providing the best possible support. It is also a professional requirement that helps therapists maintain high standards of practice.

Why people choose to work with me

I bring curiosity, warmth and respect to the therapy space. My aim is not to give you quick fixes, but to help you understand yourself more deeply and feel more robust in the face of life’s challenges. Over time, many people find that therapy helps them build resilience, clarity and the confidence to live more fully.

Final thoughts: what to expect from therapy

If you are considering therapy, it is worth recognising the courage it takes simply to start thinking about it. Therapy is not always easy, but it can be profoundly rewarding. It gives you a place to be honest, to explore your story, and to make changes that help you live with greater strength and connection.
